Moments Made for Two

In Uganda and Rwanda, the most intimate wildlife encounter on earth waits in the forest. Trekking to a mountain gorilla family in Bwindi or Volcanoes National Park is a shared challenge followed by a shared hour of wonder, and couples often tell us it is the moment they remember most. Afterwards, a hot bath, a fireside and a very good bottle of wine do the rest.

Farther north, Uganda’s Murchison Falls National Park gives you the Nile in full drama. Drift upriver by private boat toward the thundering falls, then return to a lodge deck as hippos grunt in the shallows and the sky turns copper. In Kenya’s Maasai Mara and Tanzania’s Serengeti, dawn belongs to the hot air balloon, floating silently over plains alive with wildlife, followed by a champagne breakfast laid out in the open bush.

Then there is Victoria Falls, shared by Zambia and Zimbabwe and known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders. Take a helicopter flight above the gorges, a sundowner cruise along the Zambezi, or high tea at the grand colonial Victoria Falls Hotel. When the river is low, brave couples can swim to the edge of the falls at Devil’s Pool, a story you will be retelling at every dinner party for years.
